Per Kirkeby

Per Kirkeby, Siegfried Gohr

description

Exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with show held October 17 - November 15, 1990. Includes twenty-three color plates of Kirkeby's paintings, as well as a catalog of works, a biography of the artist, and an introductory statement by Siegfried Gohr entitled "Kirkeby's House." Here, Gohr writes that when one views Kirkeby's recent paintings, "one frequently has the sense that one's eye is held in a sort of suspended animation, being both drawn into the depths of the image and stopped at its surface ... Kirkeby evokes spaces, landscapes dotted with huts, houses, trees, where water flows and sky and clouds are involved in their perceptual play of changing form and light. Yet in the midst of these scenes composed of often seductively lovely colour, the eye is brought up short again and again by sheer planes, as dense and compact as house walls, comparable in a way to the stucco of a fresco, which, though bearing a painted depiction, remains visually present and indicates to the observer that he is standing before the painted wall of a solid building." Text in German and English.
