Barbara Kruger

Barbara Kruger, Angela Carter

description

Exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with show held January 7 - January 28, 1989. Includes eight plates of Kruger's photographs and silkscreens, as well as an essay entitled "The World According to Common Sense : A General Guide to the Work of Barbara Kruger." Carter begins her essay by describing Kruger's work as "perfectly straightforward and absolutely true. This puts it in a different category from art as such, which is devious in method and message and interposes aesthetics between artist and audience ... But human beings are a categorizing species -- one of the things Kruger is talking about is the way we make our categories -- so art itis for her pictorial dialectics, although her art happens at the exact intersection where reality meets its own mechanically reproduced images. So that it starts off from questions about the nature of that reality, its contradictions, and the contradictions in its representations."
