Monuments : Leçons de Tenebres

description

"Artists' book published on the occasion of the exhibition of works by Christian Boltanski at the 42nd Venice Biennial, Palazzo delle Prigione, with an explanatory note by Christian Boltanski and a text by Susanne Pagé... In 1973, in the foyer of a junior school in Dijon, he installed the portrait photographs of each student attending the school who were then aged between 10 and 13. This permanent installation was commissioned as part of the governmental "1 %" program which budgets for the insertion of art works in public buildings.. He tightened the format, closing in on the subject... only the faces, standardized by their identical presentation, remained. All appear to be similar yet each is different"-- from Christian Boltanski: Catalogue: Books, Printed Matter, Ephemera. Includes close-up portraits of junior high school students. Text in French.
