Dan Graham

One

description

Multiple Dan Graham consisting of a modified child's toy with sliding tiles. While in the standard toy, the tiles are typically composed of sequential numerical elements, in Graham's variation all the tiles are labeled "ONE." This multiple would be reissued in black plastic by Walther König in 1995.

"One puzzle is about nominalism and what is denoted by the word 'one.' It has a hole in the center, whereas the normal number puzzle would be numbered 1-16. It was inspired by articles in Scientific American about physics and black holes. It is related to the piece Detumescence and its negation of role of advertising, featuring instead a 'hole' in the magazine page." — Dan Graham, as quoted in "Dan Graham : Works 1965 - 2000."
