"The 90s" is a series of paintings produced by On Kawara over the span of a decade, and each presents a particular date for the viewer's consideration. In his included essay on Kawara's paintings, Thierry Davila writes that the artist "has invented an unusual, striking way of making art, where he exposes himself to duration by showing the relentless unfolding of chronology, taking the time, one's own time. He has found a 'user's guide' for the calendar which has its unique shaping, its personalized, yet not individual, pre-individual implementation. The calendar as the on-going creation of art, held in the artist's hand, set in motion by its soundless, faceless, wordless inspiration ..."
